Death of the Bird by A.D.Hope

For every bird there is this last migration;
Once more the cooling year kindles her heart;
With a warm passage to the summer station
Love pricks the course in lights across the chart.

Year after year a speck on the map divided
By a whole hemisphere, summons her to come;
Season after season, sure and safely guided,
Going away she is also coming home;

And being home, memory becomes a passion
With which she feeds her brood and straws her nest;
Aware of ghosts that haunt the heart's possession
And exiled love mourning within the breast.

The sands are green with a mirage of valleys;
The palm-tree casts a shadow not its own;
Down the long architrave of temple or palace
Blows a cool air from moorland scarps of stone.

And day by day the whisper of love grows stronger,
The delicate voice, more urgent with despair,
Custom and fear constraining her no longer,
Drives her at last on the waste leagues of air.

A vanishing speck in those inane dominions,
Single and frail, uncertain of her place.
Alone in the bright host of her companions,
Lost in the blue unfriendliness of space.

She feels it close now, the appointed season:
The invisible thread is broken as she flies;
Suddenly, without warning, without reason,
The guiding spark of instinct winks and dies.

Try as she will the trackless world delivers
No way, the wilderness of light no sign,
The immense and complex map of hills and rivers
Mocks her small wisdom with its vast design.

And darkness rises from the eastern valleys,
And the winds buffet her with their hungry breath,
And the great earth, with neither grief not malice,
Receives the tiny burden of her death.

So it has been a while, But have had few Family things going on ..... Had to go away to my 96 year old Granma's Funeral, it was sad, but beautiful.

And it was great to catch up with all the Family.

Now that I have been away and am back Painting I have a couple of Images for all to have a look at. One is in Honour of my Friend Miss Smaggle ( at www.smagglestyle.com , if you haven't looked at her site go and check it out she writes far better than I do.) wearing the bird as a Hair accessory, the other is the girl with Bear Ear Beanie and was based on Mary Magdalene with all that hair.

Also have some good news have given a copy of my 'Alice' book to a publisher to have a look at, so fingers crossed I get some work out of it ??

Hi All,

Here are some images of works that I have recently painted in oils. The portrait with the green background was inspired by Lady Smaggle's (www.smagglestyle.com) idea of the ultimate accessorising being the wearing of a bird as a fascinator. So I used that as a starting point and filtered the whole thing through the Victorian aesthetic. I am trying to create these imaginary portraits which have a sort of timeless quality about them. The other image is a detail of a larger painting that is not quite finished yet (who knows where that one will go?).

Another artist I am interested in at the moment is Camille Rose Garcia. I have also started looking at the background art of the classic Disney films of the 40's and 50's such as Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella.

Getting into it !!

Hi All,

Just starting getting into serious painting, and thought I would let you know where it is at ?

Well I don't really know where it is all going, but been having fun getting there. Been looking at various Artists and images on the Net and getting lots of Ideas. In Particular I have been looking at a lovely book I brought from Work called ' The Society Portrait ' by Gabriel Badea - Paun. Which gives me lots of ideas about Composition, Gesture, and Light on the figure, Artists include works by Flandrin, Goya, Ingres, and Velazquez.

I have also been looking at works by a 1960's Artist Margaret Keane, a woman who became Famous for the paintings of winsome children with big Doe eyes ( you'll know them when you see them )

So...... I am still painting in Oils, which makes it a bit tricky when painting at home. Some I have done on canvas others I am doing on small panels which I had laying around the house (so that was very handy) Anyhow will post a couple of photo's soon of the work , just waiting for the camera batteries to recharge. If you have any other Artists or Ideas I should try please let me Know !!!
